Rio de Janeiro is a city of extremes from the shanty towns (Favelas) sprawling up the mountain side to the luxury flats along the seaside of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon as well as Barra de Tijuca. Although the city has been making great efforts to further improve upon the security, there should be no fears in regards to spending your holiday retreat within Rio de Janeiro. Whilst petty crime such as a thieved camera or wallet might take place in the tourist areas, the serious crimes are inclined to happen more inland away from the beach places where all the traveller activity can be found.

The most well-known event in Brazil is Carnival which goes on for 5 days beginning midnight on the Friday ahead of Ash Wednesday and carrying on through that Wednesday. Even though extremely packed and much more pricey compared to other periods, visitors can see lavish costumes, extraordinary and very colourful parades, dancing in the streets with live bands and entertainment almost everywhere you go. If your plans are to visit Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, be sure to plan months ahead of time and book your hotel, aparthotel, accommodation, apartamento or apartment because everything will likely be completely sold out.

You will find numerous things to do and sites to observe in Rio. Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) is a place where panoramic sights of Rio and beyond will be cherished. The most striking feature may be the green peak which projects out over the city with excellent 360 degree views of Rio de Janeiro. Make an attempt to get there prior to Sunset for an incredible twilight view of the city and very soon later a amazing evening view of Copacabana.

Yet another excellent area to see is the Jardim Botanico (Botanical Gardens) and is situated close to the Lagoa (Lagoon). The gardens were first planted in the early 19th century by Prince Regent Dom Joao and have since progressed into some of the most stunning flower and plant gardens in all of Brazil. One can find loads of plants and flowers to observe while you make your way through the strolling walkways of the gardens along with several small waterfalls. The best time to go to Jardim Botanico is during the week so that you can avoid the weekend crowds.

Parque do Flamengo is a preferred recreation area with locals along with families and couples. The Parque do Flamengo can be found near Guanabara Bay and it is an excellent place to partake in sporting activities as well as leisure time pursuits. One can find cycle paths, walking paths, ball courts and playgrounds. The Parque is a great change of pace from your beach theme activities as well as a great opportunity to see how the locals prefer to take pleasure in their free time.
