If you want to use Twitter for marketing and want to use effectively, you would need to set up a system that works without you having to spend all your time on Twitter.

You would need to have a strategic plan to build a system to establish your own identity on Twitter in a niche segment thereby with more and more recognition you are able to also promote your product and services subtly.

While trying to build a viewer ship it is quite likely that you will keep just making your mailing list lengthier. This does not help. What you need is a target segment a niche list of people who are good prospects that would be interested in your product or service.

Using Twitter you can set up automated feeding message mechanism that can work automatically from time to time feeding relevant information filled tweets on your behalf. You will not be required to sit at your desk all day long to do this as the system will work to do your marketing for you.

It is important for you to all the time keep contributing to the effort of building your reputation as the SME. At the same time use your tweets intelligently to let the viewers know about your products and service you are able to offer. There will come a time once you are established as the expert that the viewers will start asking you for solution to their problems or needs and you can accordingly then promote your product or service as a solution to their problems.
